Houck ramps up splitter and Lugo works in a cutter

Tanner Houck  increases his splitter usage

The 2024 Baseball Forecaster gave Tanner Houck (RHP, BOS) an UP: 3.50 ERA over 150 IP. So far, the right-hander has been ever better, with a 2.54 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 117 IP. He's generating plenty of ground balls with a 55% GB% and has a 3.08 xERA. 

When looking at his arsenal, has Houck made any changes? 

Like several Boston pitchers, Houck has cut his four-seam fastball usage and he has also reduced his cutter to a 2.2% usage. As seen in the graph above, Houck is throwing his split-finger fastball 25.5% of the time in 2024. He utilized the pitch 11.4% of the time in 2023. 

How is his split-finger fastball performing in 2024?
