BATTING: 5-week HctX Leaders/Laggers

Over the last few years, BaseballHQ.com has been using a new metric to evaluate batter performance. The metric is Hard Contact Index (HctX), and it measures the batter’s ability to put the ball into play with, to bedazzle you with a sabermetric expression, some extra mustard on it.

In this edition of the BBG, we’ll look at the HctX rankings over the last five weeks. Keep in mind that a five-week run is not necessarily representative of a player’s ability, nor predictive of his balance-of-year performance.

Calculating HctX

A quick refresher: HctX is calculated in four steps:

  • First, we calculate each batter’s ct%, which is (H-HR)/(AB-HR-K).
