This is a very simple, basic column. Take the relievers who are projected for at least two holds or a save. From that subset, take the relievers who have an actual ERA to date under 3.50, an xERA to date under 3.50, a projected ERA (pERA) under 3.50, and a projected xERA (pxERA) under 3.50. You end up with just seven closers, one job-share closer, and seven non-closers. You want the best shot at preserving ERA and WHIP with relievers at the end of the season; these are the guys who give you the best shot.
Let's start with the closers who meet these simple criteria:
| closers | IP | ERA | WHP | xERA | pSV | pIP | pERA | pWHP | pxERA |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Duran, Jhoan PHI | 45.1 | 1.79 | 1.04 | 1.97 | 8 | 13 | 2.08 | 1.08 | 2.11 |
| Miller, Mason SD | 52.1 | 0.86 | 0.82 | 1.87 | 7 | 13 | 2.08 | 0.92 | 2.01 |
| Smith, Cade CLE | 56.0 | 2.25 | 1.09 | 2.98 | 7 | 13 | 3.46 | 1.08 |
