A month ago, I wrote about how we might be able to use Bill James' Plexiglass Principle in conjunction with an in-season Xtreme Regression Drafting (XRD) strategy. After missing a series and returning for a pinch-hit appearance August 13, Jason Kipnis (2B, CLE) returned to the starting lineup August 14. After a blazing hot start to the season, he has cooled off considerably, having not homered since June 17, and only recording three steals since July 1. His year-to-date numbers remain strong, though it appears obvious that his power surge to open the season was a bit over his head. Kipnis had eight home runs by the end of May, but is still looking for his first month with above average power.

In the off-season, there was concern with how Miguel Cabrera (3B, DET) would handle the hot corner. When an errant ground ball fractured his orbital bone in spring training, those fears weren’t quelled. Fast forward to mid-August, and Cabrera is holding his own in the field.

Owners need to take risks and get incremental value if they are going to catch the leaders with less than 50 games to go. Here are some of those calculated risks with MIL, SD, SF, OAK and BAL.
