Up until last week, the theme for this major league season was the oblique injury, with a record setting number of this type of injury already having occurred. We get a reprieve if only for a week or so but I’m sure there are better ways to take our minds off these pesky side injuries. This week three high profile players battle elbow issues and all three eventually could be Tommy John candidates.

Quality starting pitchers are hard to replace and with two new key injuries to Jaime Garcia and Carl Pavano, their owners are looking for any decent arms. Plus a bunch of retroactive moves this week.

When I began covering injuries back in 1993, Tommy John surgery was not nearly as successful as it is now. Torn labrums, flexor mass injuries, modified Mumford surgery, microfracture knee surgery and others were rarely reported because they either didn’t exist or the journalist reporting on the injury did not report true name for various reasons. And oblique injuries? Very, very rare.

Another fun week at the office watching the waiver wire and transaction wires run at full speed. Even with all the disabled list moves we've had, just a tad over 250 so far, this is not a record setting pace—yet.
