Coming into the season, Boston’s starting pitching was considered by many to be a relative weakness of the team, especially after the season-ending injury to Lucas Giolito. However, the team’s starting pitching has been a major strength thus far, as Boston’s rotation has amassed a 1.53 ERA, the best mark of any team in the majors. While some of the success could be owed to what has been a relatively weak slate of opposing offenses, drastic changes to the team’s pitching development under new pitching coach Andrew Bailey could also deserve some credit for the success and Bailey’s work has earned praise from the team’s pitchers since spring training.
