DIVISIONAL OUTLOOK: AL West—OF problems in OAK

Oakland Athletics

After leading the AL in runs following the 2012 All-Star break and then during the first month of 2013, Oakland's offense has fallen on hard times. Though they sit atop the AL West, the A's are just 8th in AL scoring and dead last over 15 games in July (averaged three runs per contest). Obviously generating more offense was the purpose behind Grant Green's call-up, and Brandon Moss' contact/BA issues have been well-documented. But a lot of the problem lies with an OF whose power and depth was supposed to compensate for other shortcomings and has sucked up most of the DH time. Per the numbers thru Saturday, this hasn't gone quite as well as originally hoped.
