DIVISIONAL OUTLOOK: NL East—Fernandez closing in on IP limit

The decision to put Jose Fernandez (RHP, MIA) on the team’s Opening Day roster shocked most everyone as the 20-year-old had logged just 138.1 IP as a professional and none above Single-A prior to 2013. The phenom has pitched better than anyone could have expected, making the NL All-Star squad after posting a 2.75 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 8.9 Dom and 3.4 Ctl in 104.2 IP in the first half of the season.

Now we will see how the team handles the 150-170 IP limit they placed on him at the start of the season. Fernandez has averaged roughly six innings per start, so at that rate, he should have about 8-10 starts for the remainder of the season. Since the team is nowhere near contention and building for the future, he figures to pitch to...
