Jose Berríos (RHP, MIN) would normally be expected to get the Opening Day nod at the top of the Twins rotation, but their best pitcher to date this spring has been Kenta Maeda (RHP, MIN; pictured above). Maeda, who led the majors in 2020 with a 0.75 WHIP and finished second in the Cy Young award voting, has continued to be stingy in 2021. Through his first nine spring training innings, he has allowed only one hit and one walk while striking out 12. 

At age 33, with over 2,200 professional innings on Maeda’s right arm, there’s a strong possibility for workload management here. In 2020, he only made one start on four days’ rest, while his other 10 starts had a full five days of rest in between. Prior to that, he made 26...
