Sonny Gray’s (RHP, CIN) struggles in a Yankee uniform and subsequent trade to Cincinnati have made him a frequently discussed player this offseason. That was only heightened when Eno Sarris published an article at the Athletic in which Gray discussed his shortcomings with his fastball and questioned the way the Yankees prescribed his pitch mix. That premise centered around two things: 1) The Yankees wanted him to move away from his fastball, and 2) to use his slider instead of his curveball. Another portion of the piece discussed Gray’s well-known home (1.3 Cmd, 1.7 hr/9, 6.98 ERA) and road (3.6 Cmd, 0.4 hr/9, 3.17 ERA) splits.

Following up on those premises, Gray threw his fastball at the lowest rate during the 2018...
