The Nationals’ front office might have had a collective cardiac event when they were forced to place super-ace Max Scherzer (RHP, WAS) back on the IL with what was termed a mild rhomboid strain (sore back). For now, Erick Fedde (RHP, WAS) will take Scherzer’s place in the rotation, leaving the upper minors a bit bare as far as SP depth is concerned. Is there anybody left down there to call up?

Kyle McGowin (RHP, WAS), who’s already thrown a few innings for the Nationals this season and last, could be next in line for a promotion—his 2019 MLB 9.69 ERA in 13 IP notwithstanding. His numbers with AAA-Fresno have been a bit more encouraging: 3.86 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 10.09 K/9, 2.52 BB/9, 1.19 HR/9 in 60.2 IP covering 11 GS....
