RELIEVERS: Last word on spring training from 2021

This week, the column focuses on some things that happened during spring training that you should tuck into your back pocket as the season gets underway.

Let's start in Boston where both Matt Barnes (RHP, BOS) and Adam Ottavino (RHP, BOS) each had a nice month of March:

BOS IP K BB HR H ER
================ === == == == == ==
M.Barnes         5.1  8  3  0  2  0
A.Ottavino       5.1  6  1  0  5  0
H.Sawamura       3.2  6  7  0  3  2
D.Hernandez (L)  4.2  4  6  0  2  2
G.Whitlock       9.0 12  0  0  8  1

As good as it has been for Barnes and Ottavino, you can see that Hirokazu Sawamura (RHP, BOS) and Darwinzon Hernandez (LHP, BOS) have had some early wildness in their outings. This is not all that unusual in spring training...

This column covers relievers who might cost you a lot chasing saves but then fizzle out because of skills or injury risk.

This is the annual sleepers column, but let's be honest: There are no sleepers. There are relievers with great skills who are cheaper than they should be ... and that's what you want anyway.
