RELIEVERS: A lot to consider both now and later

Certainly a lot happened last week—mostly in the NL with respect to bullpens. Here is an overview of how changes affect August.

Atlanta traded closer Jim Johnson (RHP, LA) to the Dodgers where he will work in set-up. It leaves Arodys Vizcaíno (RHP, ATL) suddenly in the role of Braves closer. But should he be?

ATL IP Dom Cmd HR/9 xERA BPV Clean/App LI xERA' BPV' LI'
=============     ==== ==== ==== ==== ==== === ========= ==== ===== ==== ====
Vizcaino           9.0  8.0  2.0  0.0 4.52  43    9/10   1.32  4.52  43  1.32
Aardsma           20.0  9.5  2.3  0.9 3.69  73   13/20   1.28  2.94 144  1.04

xERA', BPV' and LI' are those indicators over the past 30 days.

It is far too soon to know whether Vizcaino will succeed...

This is the annual sleepers column, but let's be honest: There are no sleepers. There are relievers with great skills who are cheaper than they should be ... and that's what you want anyway.
